'Still I am willing to give her back, if ... among the Argives go without, since that was unfitting.' (1.116-119)
- Agamemnon
King Agamemnon the chief instigator of all the happenings of evil. Even at the start, with his stubbornness of heart, with a threat he refuses to give back Chryseis, the daughter of Apollo in exchange of a golden scepter. Even the man praised the king and told his mighty works still Agamemnon used harsh words and insulted him. He also displays this unworthiness to Calchas, saying his prophecies are always negative. His wicked heart reached its peak when he prizes Chryseis above all else and will give her up only in exchange for another treasure in this case Brisies. His greed in power and wealth shows in the battle of Menelaus and Paris where if Paris loses, Helen of Troy and all of her treasures must surrender, in this time also where he asks Priam to pay all the bounty or else continue the war.
His selfishness and only thinking of his own good even thought it comes to the point that some men have to sacrifice their own lives really shows what value King Agamemnon have. He always looks for his own interest and doesn’t think of what others feel. Without Agamemnon there is no war, he always pursue what he wants, good or evil plans. He wants to have full pledge power by any means, even causing other peoples life, emotion and crossing other men’s self worth. He always orders his armies of his evil deeds, and he is the only one who is acknowledge, gets the prize and benefiting from the actions without even helping.
All of these things, the war and the rage of Achilles will no longer occur if it wasn’t for King Agamemnon’s cruelty. If only accepted the ransom and gave back the daughter, the war will not happen and if he did not ask for a replacement for Chrysies, Achilles will be able to control his fervor and eventually stop the feuds between them.
We can say, in our world today, in modern time we can see other people with stubbornness of heart or even by own selves we are guilty of greediness. In some ways or the other, we may not actually feel but sometimes in just our own little actions we do some unnecessary things that cause us to be stubborn. For instance like basketball, a sport which we all know sometimes shows how selfish we are. By just ignoring your own coach, not following his rules and regulations while in the court and pursuing your own self interest creates differences between you and him which lead to a great feud. It can be also with your own teammates, playing basketball requires camaraderie and teamwork. If you don’t value and trust your teammates you just concentrate on your own you may not attain what you want and even worst sacrificing your friendship with them.
Being humble does not hurt you being a man. However it increases your self awareness in the people around you. Care with one another value their worth in your life and many times these people whom you do not take seriously are the one who will help you succeed in your life.
"A man will do more for his stubbornness than for his religion or his country."
